Workshop on soil quality offered
A soil and tissue analysis workshop sponsored by the Kona Coffee Farmers Association and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, will be held in two sessions on Feb. 24. Both workshops will be led by Jonathan Deenik, UH-Manoa specialist in soil fertility and soil quality.
The session from 9 a.m. to noon at the Daifukuji Temple in Honalo will be a presentation on soil science regarding the various soils of the Kona Coffee Belt and nutrient management to enhance crop production.
The second session, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bob Nelson’s farm in Kainaliu, will provide an opportunity for coffee farmers to discuss recent soil and tissue results with Deenik. Farmers are asked to bring their most recent analyses. Deenik will be discussing soil science at the farmer’s level and explaining how to maintain healthy coffee trees and good quality crop production by understanding and managing soil.

Grocery magnate Burkle exits Yahoo’s board
SAN FRANCISCO — Supermarket magnate Ron Burkle has decided not to stand for re-election to the board of Yahoo, where he has been a director since late 2001, the company said Tuesday.
Burkle, head of the Yucaipa Cos. LLC investment vehicle, wants to “devote more time to his other business interests,” according to a company statement Tuesday.
